What are the Saturating Research Areas?

It may sound to be a little pessimistic, but it is true that a huge number of research areas in the domain of management research are turning out to be saturated and getting out of date, with the graduation of time. One of the major reasons behind this is that the researchers are gradually turning out to be inclined towards incrementing the research volume, rather than coming out with path breaking and seminal studies. If the research papers across the various academic domains of management are being looked at, then it can be seen that most of the studies are contextual in nature, and the theoretical foundations of those studies are molded in accordance with the context of the study, rather than coming up with any new theoretical foundations.

There are various areas in management domain, which are getting obsolete, and following are some of the examples of those areas:

  • High frequency finance is an area, which is getting obsolete very fast. This domain is based on the application of volatility modeling, vector error correction, and additional time series econometric techniques on high frequency stock market data across the world. During the last decade, the amount of research in this area has been so much, that any contribution in this domain can hardly obtain any significance.
  • Employee satisfaction in organizations in an area in the domain of organizational behavior, which has been considered as an obsolete area nearly fifteen years before. During the mid of twentieth century, studies on this perspective started as a consequence of the perceived dynamism in the organizational contexts. Now, hardly any sector or any reputed organization have been left for the researchers to study this phenomenon.
  • Energy consumption-economic growth nexus is an area in energy economics domain, which is getting obsolete very fast.
